my dog has been suffering from kennel cough for 2 weeks already… i took her to the vet and prescribed an antibiotic and asks me to not place the dog in a cold place. is there any other alternative where i can help my dog aside from giving her antibiotics?

Antibiotics are the only thing that will cure the infection. If the ones the vet gave you aren’t working then go back to the vet and get different/stronger ones.

To help make your dog more comfortable some cough syrups are OK for dogs. Find one that doesn’t have acetaminophen in it. Follow the directions for children (unless you have a very large dog, in which case the adult dosage is fine). But that’s not going to help the infection, just reduce the cough temporarily.

The only thing you can do is follow the vets orders. Keep her in a warm area, if you want, after you lay her down, put some blankets under and over her. Don’t make it so she can’t move, but just so she will be warm. Give her the antibiotics, and wash your blankets after she is well again.

Kennel cough may cure itself in two to three weeks if left untreated. Keep in mind, this only applies to mild cases. A more serious cough will require medical treatment. Operating a vaporizer at home will relax your dog and regulate breathing. Running a shower on the highest level to steam your bathroom creates a sauna-like setting that will also help your dog. You can additionally give your dog echinacea three times daily. Of course, always be careful when giving your dog too much of any drug, herbal or not.

You can buy Amoxicillin at your vets, give it to your dog once in the morning once at night for two weeks. This should cure it. I hope this helps.

I do volunteer work for a non-kill animal shelter and foster over 15 dogs at a time. Sadly I’ve had my fair share of Kennel cough.

Kennel cough (also called canine cough) is a highly contagious virus or bacterial infection that’s spread through the air from another infected animal. The vet can make a diagnosis after doing a routine physical exam and getting a recent history of your dog’s contact with other dogs.

No, I got a dog at the pound. She had kennel cough, so nobody would adopt her, so we took her to the vet. The first round of medicine did not work, so the vet had to give her stronger medicine and eventually she finally got over the kennel cough. It seems like it took FOREVER, but it was worth it. Don’t let your dog around other dogs or they will get it too.
    Hope this helped!
