what should i do about a dry persistent cough?
31.July, 2009
i had the flu about three weeks ago and since then i’ve had a dry cough that will not go away. i have constant coughing fits that leave me gasping for air. this also leads to some insomnia, i cough myself awake. my parents don’t have the time or energy to take me to the doctor. any suggestions?
Have you noticed any heartburn? I had a bad cough once that won’t go away and it turned out to be acid reflux burning my throat. I had to go on Acid reflux meds and than it went away.

Force your parents to take you to the doctor or threaten to cough on them

make sure you don’t drink anything that is cold.
to help the coughing, drink warm water (with honey)
that should help.
and if your parents dont have time to take you to the doctors, maybe a relative (aunt or uncle) can.
hope you feel better

Yeah, this happened to me, too. For a temporary cure, dissolve some honey into warm (not hot) water and drink it do soothe your throat. However, you really should get your cough checked, in case it’s an early sign of bronchitis or something.

i have the same cough right now, too. if you have an albuterol inhaler available (prescribed to most people with asthma) then try two puffs of that and see if you can breathe. other than that, just wait until it goes away.

A cough after a viral respiratory illness is common. It can persist for weeks or even months if untreated. And, possibly even when treated.
Try to get your parents to let you see a doctor. He can help you. Otherwise, not much you can do ‘cept let it run it’s course.

Raw garlic acts as a natural antibiotic, crush it over salads, or pasta.
Take time off from school or work, so that you can sleep all day if you’re up nights.
Take this seriously, have it checked, this could lead to a bacterial lung infection if you don’t look after yourself.
Hope you feel better soon.
