Does cough drops with menthol fight or soothes coughs?

Does menthol actually fight the mucus which causes coughs or does it just soothe the cough with the minty sensation?

Is it just a massage kind of like a heat patch for muscle aches?

Soothe. Menthol is a numbing agent.

    It just soothes it and seems to open the nasal passages slightly. I like original Hall’s instead of the newer fruit flavor’s. You probably don’t care what I like and that’s understandable.
