My boyfriends been super sick for the past few days. He’s had terrible coughing fits, he’ll start coughing suddenly and sometimes can’t stop until he gags and he can’t breath through his nose at all no matter how much he blows it. I’ve given him MucinexDM for the coughing and a nasal decongestant but they has no effect at all. What is the best medicine can I get over the counter for his symptoms?

try green tea with lemon and honey for the itchy throat. Also Tylenol Severe Sore Throat (it’s a liquid) works wonders on cough. And it will put him to sleep so he can rest. Ultimately, rest and lots of water works best for the cough. Also, you can put Vicks Vapor rub under his nose so he can breathe easier.

Mucinex DM doesn’t work for me either.

For shortened duration of this affliction, I highly recommend 15-20 minutes in the sun, daily. ~100 [mg] per [lb] of body weight in Vitamin C (preferebly powdered form) daily, spread out throughout the day (say in 2-3 hour increments). Make sure to go back to 1-3 [g] per day of Vitamin C when well again… the high dosages won’t be toxic, but might not be warranted depending on his overall condition.

For immediate relief, boil about 12-16 [oz] of water, squeeze about half (or a little more) fresh lemon juice into it, and then add approximately 2-4 tablespoons of raw honey.

A netti-pot (available at Walgreens) works wonders, too. I also like the trusty $15 water vaporizer/steamer (with vapor-rub in the heating tray) that can be found at Wal-Mart.

Plenty of rest, lots and lots of liquids (80-100 [oz] per day (little less than a gallon)), plenty of warm clothing to maintain a relatively warm body-temp (a mild fever (99-101) is actually beneficial for the body… it’s doing it’s job), absolutely no sugar / artificial sweeteners, no junk food, stay off the dairy (which facilitates mucus production), and physical clearing of all mucus build-up… don’t swallow any of it!

There are only a couple of decongestants for oral use, and there’s nothing much to either. The same can be said of dextromethorphan (the DM part) for cough suppression. Repackaging the ingredients among the myriad name brands doesn’t make them any more effective. You’ll find that if he’s desperate for nasal decongestion, then you’ll have to get him something that goes in the nose: phenylephrine or oxymetazoline, in either spray or drop formulation.
