What does it mean when your coughing up blood?

My boyfriend has been coughing up blood all day. What does it mean? Is he going ot be okay? Is it serious? Hes going to the doctors tomorrow, but its scaring me.

It can mean lots of different things: from something as simple as a burst blood vessel in his throat all the way up to lung cancer. Chances are it’s something minor, but the only person who can tell you for sure is the doctor.

    If the blood looks bight red and is not coagulated, it is probably due to an infection, irritation or a capillary that is leaking (like a nose bleed). If it is coagulated, there is something bleeding in the throat or upper airways. If it is foamy, it is coming from the lungs. Only foamy blood is an immediate concern. Coagulated blood can be a symptom of something serious, but not necessarily.
