My Westie is dry coughing heavily and producing a small amount of white spittle, is this cause for concern?

He has been heavily dry coughing and gagging all day, and producing the same small amount of white spittle, no sign of food or any foreign object, after his coughing spell.
Make sure he didn’t get into anything, we had 2 westies, one got into the garbage a managed to swallow a chicken bone, she coughed up white foamy spit until we took her to the vet.

He may have Kennel Cough, if he continues over the weekend make an appointment with the vet for Monday. Just be sure to keep him away from other dogs kennel cough can be contagious to other dogs.

You are contradicting yourself a bit…was this a "coughing spell" or has it lasted all day? If it lasted more than a few minutes I would say it is cause for at least a call to your vet.

it could be kennel cough but a consistent cough can be a symptom of heart problem also. either way you need to see the vet.

Are you sure he didn’t get into anything…? Otherwise has he been around any other dogs recently (Kennel Cough)-Try rubbing his trachea up and down to see if he coughs.
If not, has he been treated or checked for parasites… there are some that migrate through the trachea or the esophagus. If he keeps it up you may want to see a veterinarian… especially if it is interfering with his eating and drinking.
Hope this helps!
