How can i prevent coughing fits at night due to bronchitis?

I was just diagnosed with bronchitis and my cough is somewhat unbearable at night. I wake up in these fits every 1-2 hours where i cough so hard I feel like I’m going to vomit, then it stops, i hit the inhaler and can go back to bed. Waking up every 2 hours has hindered my energy during the day, how can i stop having coughing fits at night?
My physician prescribes H C Tussive (cough syrup with codeine). It helps some. I also have to sleep sitting up like in a recliner or propped up with pillows.

i had bronchitis bad last winter and the dr gave me albuterol and a vaporizer, and it helped, also gave me super heavy duty antibiotics, cleared it up.
I have COPD which is basically bronchitis and emphysema, so I can relate.

Yes a vapouriser will help big time, but I found the coughing starts because the cold air hits the back of your throat, which then makes you cough and cough and cough. What I do is curl my tongue back till it hits the roof of my mouth and hold it there until I fall asleep. This stops the cold air from hitting the back of your throat. Try it, it may work for you, it may not.

My physician usually gives me a narcotic based cough syrup to take at night to help me sleep. The nartotics help soothe the muscles and allows you to rest better.
