My 8.5 month old son seems to always have a cold. He does go to a nursery during the day. He is a light sleeper normally, but it’s worse when he wakes up congested and coughing at night. We do the humidifier and his mattress is tilted. Any other things we can try? I know they can’t really take any medicine at this point. But ever since birth, it seems like congestion keeps him up at night.

Vick vapor rub baby is a life savor! And you can use it on your 8month old. also run a hot shower and steam up the bathroom then hold your child in the room while its steamy.

That’s really all you can do. It helped for me to hold my baby while she slept. That kept her warm, humid and elevated. Lots of resources are also available at http://www.babycenter.com/big-kid.

I know with whooping cough, you can close the bathroom door, turn on the shower really hot, and sit with your baby (not in the water of course) in the room so he can breath in the steam for awhile. It might help with a regular cough. Another thing to do is have him sleep in a swing overnight, just while he has the cough, to keep his nose from getting so stuffy.

I have two children and I went thru this with both of them. I f your son is coughing is because he has mucous that he is trying to expel. The best thing you can do is try to get your son to expel the mucous by giving him 2 ounces of water. After he drinks the water sit him up for a few minutes and try patting his back on his left side and than right side with your hand arked. This will help him release the mucous and his coughing should be less. you can also try some chamomile tea with honey, this helps with the coughing and the mucous.

Are you sure it’s congestion and not asthma? Coughing in the middle of the night is a really good symptom of asthma. Call the doctor.

I know I will get a thumbs down on this but I will tell you anyway, I have three kids, my 8 year old son stayed with allergies, my 5 year old daughter was never sick, and now my 9 month old son is always sick with a cold and allergies. My pharmacist told me to give him 20-25 drops of benadryl right before he goes to bed which is barely anything but it dries out their sinuses so they don’t drip in their throats and make them cough and it works great. I don’t do this every night but when I notice he has a runny nose and is coughing a little I give it to him. Good Luck.
