What do you think about giving a 12month old cough medicine?
28.December, 2009
My son just turned a year old a few weeks ago. He is so sick though. He has a really nasty cough. My daycare lady says she has given her own kids at her age cough medicine, but i dont know if that ok. They seem like fine kids very active and smart. What do yall think? Do i give him a very low dose to help him recover or just tylenol?
I think I’m not going to risk my son’s health by giving him medication that clearly states it’s not made for him.
It’s a cough, you’ll have to let it run its course. If you are worried then take him to his doctor and see what they say.

NO NO NO. Use Vicks to help his cough and wait it out. It if doesn’t get better in a few days, take him in, but I’d highly suggest NOT giving your one year old childrens cough meds.

Most pediatricians say not to give anything but tylenol or ibuprofen until age 4. I would definitely not give it to a child as young as 12 mos. Cough medicines have been to link to tons of deaths. It is just not appropriate for young children. My poor boys had horrid colds with cough and congestion and we just had to suffer through it. Running hot hot water in the shower and letting it steam up then taking kids in there to play with a few toys or listen to a story can help with the cough and congestion. A humidifier is a great thing as well. Good luck.

There are lots of good cough medicines out there for infants. I would stay away from adult strength cough medicines. You never know!! If you are unsure of what one is good, ask you pediatrician or local doctor. If his cough is too bad and infant strength medicine is not helping, you might want to call your pediatrician anyway and see if they can prescribed you something a little stronger. It is definitely better to be safe than sorry. This is YOUR child, NOT the daycare lady’s!!

Here is the Dr. Sears recommendation: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/T089304.asp
Also– I use NatraBio Children’s Cold and Flu Relief on my 6 month old when she has any cold/congestion symptoms. It if for 4 months and up and can be used as often as every 20 minutes until symptoms subside. If the cough is being perpetuated by congestion– it will help. It’s a homeopathic remedy, so it will be safe. I actually used it on my daughter for that nighttime teething cough and it worked great. We are using it on her right now as she drags through day 5 of a nasty respiratory virus. It’s the only thing that dries her up.
