Can a dog contract Kennel cough even though he was vaccinated three weeks prior to the kennel?

My 7 year old pug has developed a gagging cough 5 days after returning home from the kennel.The cough seems to come in waves sometimes when he is excited sometimes after eating. He slept through the night without coughing at all. He dveloped this symptom after his companion pug became sick and had to be hospitalized for HGE. Hemmorragic gastroenteritis.
Yes, the vaccine protects against only about 20% of the strains of kennel cough-there’s a much better chance of him getting it than avoiding it, even with the vaccine, if he was exposed to bordatella.

Yes, because the kennel cough vaccine only protects against a few strains of the many, many stains of kennel cough out there. Also, if he was already sick, his immune system was already stressed and he was more susceptible to infection.
He needs to go back to the vet for a diagnosis and treatment, hopefully it’s kennel cough, but a lot of things can cause coughing,

vaccines are not 100% protection, yes your dog could have contracted kennel cough.

The bordatella (Kennel cough) vaccine does not prevent kennel cough..it only "helps" with 2-3 out of 32 strains. The duration of illness wil lbe just as long vaccinated as unvaccinated.
