What are the effects of drinking regular cough syrup and sprite?

Cuz ppl I know drink regular cough syrup and sprite, but I’m pretty sure if it’s not prescribed it doesn’t do anything.

It gets them "high" depending on how much of the syrup they put in it.
The ingredient they look at is Dextromethorphan.

    some drugs in cough syrup harm the brain, when taken in large quantities
