Can alcoholics drink medication like cough syrup?

I read that cooking with alcohol does not completely eliminate the content or the taste, which can make it difficult sometimes if a dish requires it. So what do alcoholics do if they need to drink cough syrup or other medications that contain alcohol? I understand that cough syrup can even be abused for its content (yuck), and some states require ID for someone to buy it.
I have heard that some people start to acquire a taste for alcohol, and even develop a dependence on it, from common cold medications that contain alcohol like Vick’s Nyquil. These people say that not only does Nyquil help to relieve coughs and cold symptoms, but also to help them sleep and reduce anxiety in much the same way people would have a night cap alcohol drink at bedtime. I have friends who state that they do not drink on a daily basis but somehow they also take Nyquil several times a week, and in general it averages out, between the Nyquil and the cocktails, to at least one drink every single day. People who have a dependence on alcohol also have other over the counter items that contain alcohol like Listerene and other mouth washes that contain alcohol and instead of splitting the contents out they drink it.

People who can’t safely ingest alcohol (I am one of them) simply avoid using medications that contain alcohol. There are all sorts of cough and cold medications that don’t contain alcohol and work perfectly well. It’s really not a big deal at all.
