When you cough it up, is it unhealthy to swallow it back in?

Phlegm comes from your lungs and throat passages. There will obviously be times where you don’t have a choice but to swallow the phlegm but generally you are better off getting rid of it. It won’t hurt you to swallow it but it might re-introduce it back into your respiratory system.

phlegm comes from the lungs. there were studies that it is healthier for the environment if you swallow your phlegm instead of spitting it anywhere, coz your stomach acid will just digest it and decrease the risk of spreading the bacteria.

Phlegm comes from the lungs and it sits on the walls of the lungs. It is better too spit it out because if you swallow it it can just spread and make more phlegm and, well, you get the idea. The more phlegm in your lungs the quicker the bacteria will breed/spread.
