what causes it because I’ve always done it?
Naw man, the morning hawk and spit into the toilet is pretty much universal. Your body stops certain functions during sleep and it builds up overnight.

It is NOT normal.
If you are a smoker it is a warning… time to stop coz your lungs are getting messed up. If you have reacted to a cold virus it could be another… or if you are eating too many mucus producing foods (basically all dairy foods and any foods to which you may have an allergic reaction) in your diet - esp within an hour or two of going to bed.
If none of these things are true, then go see your doctor.

No everybody does not cough up phlegm in the morning, there can be many causes for the same .The commonest cause is smoking, other causes are dusty environment or smoky foggy conditions.Other causes can be allergy or some infection. The practical solution is to get your chest x-ray done to rule out any infection. You check your environment for other causes.you can also inhale steam for some relief. If there is allergy ,avoid allergens and take anti-allerguc treatment.

Do you smoke? it sounds like you may have copd, you should see your doctor, a sample of this phlegm should be sent to the lab for culture and perhaps a chest x-ray and lung function tests. If you do smoke you need to stop now.
