i would like something i can give him myself instead of going to the vet, they charge an arm and leg just for the visit and then the suggestions.

A runny nose and a cough is kennel cough. Must go to the vet to get antibiotics. Will not get better on its own.Get vaccations to prevent it from happening again.Part of owning a pet.Sorry…

If your pup is sick then he must see a vet. If you can’t afford it, maybe you shouldn’t have a dog.

A chronic cough is really nothing to attempt to manage at home. You should really get him to the vet before it gets worse.

Sounds like Kennel Cough. Some dogs shake this off eventually, but this virus can be dangerous to a puppy and the elderly (it can progress to pneumonia). Some vets these days are prescribing a routine course of antibiotics to prevent this from going to pneumonia although because it’s a virus, the KC itself can’t be cured. Cough meds. can help with the coughing (we use Benelyn here, just a small amount). But you do need to phone your vet (and he will most likely want to see your puppy to judge how bad he is). This is hugely catching to other dogs so don’t take him out off your property now, and if you do see your vet, leave him in your car until your vet is ready. Don’t take him into the waiting area until you know what he has.

Dogs = vet bills, unfortunately, but it is your responsibility (by law in the UK now) to give him the treatment he needs, when he needs it.

It sounds like kennel cough, a virus caused respiratory infection.

You need to *at least* CALL a vet and explain the situation. They may want to see your pup, or may ask you to keep an eye on him for a couple more days…you need to heed the vet’s advice either way. The call is completely free.

KC is highly contagious. Most vets will prescribe a round of antibiotics to prevent secondary infections.

One of our dogs had it when we took him from the shelter. I stupidly delayed vet treatment (partly because of some answers on here, saying "wait it out.") His ended up turning into pnuemonia. The cost to treat the illness at that point was literally an arm and a leg…2 doses of strong antibiotics, steroid treatments, an IV, and they wanted to do chest xrays.

Owning an animal comes with responsibilities..the same as having a baby.
Take it to the vet…while it is still alive!
