My 7 month old Bernese Mountain Dog has had a chronic cough for about a month. She is acting fine, eating, playing and very happy. She coughs every morning as soon as she wakes up, and whenever she gets up from laying down for awhile. Exercise does not make her cough. She has been vaccinated against kennel cough. We heat our house with wood and it is very dry- could this be the problem? She does seem to want alot of water.

DONT PANIC about my answer, my last dobe had a bad cough, it turned out to be cardiomyopathy (heart condition) phone vet for advice, good luck, i dont want to scare you but do check it out, cus you would if it were a child.

If she only coughs when she gets up from laying down it could be some infection in her throat… The same thing happened to my dog…

It could be the dry air, but If she’s not on preventative, she could have heartworms. A simple blood test diagnoses whether your dog is infected. Heartworms are life-threatening, so if you don’t have her on preventative, get her tested. Sometimes dogs show no symptoms or only show the coughing symptoms.

It could be the dry air, try a humidifier.

Good Luck, hope her cough clears up!
