I was hospitalized (for the first time in my life) for 3-days and released two weeks ago. I was treated for Pneumonia, and took a couple of rounds of antibiotics since being released. I feel pretty good again, but have a dry cough that is sporadic, and I’m still a little hoarse. Is this common, and if so, how long does it usually last? I’m healthy and a non-smoker, nor am I around smokers. Thank you!
Your lungs probably went through a lot of stress, some people who suffer from pneumonia have permanent breathing problems, some 10% reduction, some more and others less—It depends on how early it was caught, and how severe the infection was and how fit/healthy the patient is.
By permanent I just mean long-term, I guess no damage to the lungs can be considered forever unless they’re like physically removed or something.. Anyways, I’d call my doctor for a quick check-up to ask about the cough so you don’t end up being hospitalized again (people who suffer pneumonia once are more likely to suffer it again.. You know how sofa cushions can get pressed in by people sitting/laying on them long enough, that’s sort of what happened to your lungs, the bacteria made it more hospitable for future infections)
Anyways, I can’t force you to visit your doctor so I’ll give you some information to help you out..
The below link will be to an article I’ve written on how to naturally increase immune-function specifically to the lungs, if your infection is coming back this will marginalize the blow.

Best of wishes, and there’s no MUL (maximum uptake limit), so you can take as much as you like for as long as you like pretty much.. It should decrease your chances of getting a cough in the future, and will also help your lungs heal from the trauma of your past infection.
What can be real root cause behind my persistent dry cough?
29.March, 2012
I am having dry cough problems for last 5 years. I have consulted with 2 doctors. They take blood tests and X-RAY of my chest. They told me every thing is normal and give me medicines for my cough which they suggest is normal cough. However the cough never really went away, only the intensity of cough decreases when I take medicines. Once medicines are over, dry cough starts again.
I wonder whether my doctors are missing something. Please give your opinions friends.
No Mary, I don’t smoke. I don’t drink alcohol either.
May be allergy ??
But the following ayurvedic medicine
SEPTILIN Table (By Himalaya)
2-2 (with hot water/tea for 15 days)
thereafter 1 -1 tablet
if hot water/ tea not available, take with normal water.
see the result in 10-15 days
u should be fully cured in 2-3 months.
When u are cured fully as tonic against cold/cough u can take septilin during winter and rainy seasons (few weeks each time)
just give me feedback ashokagcr@yahoo.co.in
Hi, for over a week I have had a mostly dry cough during the day, with a little light yellow or clear mucus every now and then. Each morning I cough up a thicker light green mucus. I do not have a fever, even though I thought I did, several times, due to my nose tingling a little (only once or twice). Eating ice cream seems to induce my dry cough, worse than normal. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
Bronchitis. Almost definetly Bronchitis; the green mucus is one of the key indicators. The nose stuff too. And you probably had a low-grade fever, which would feel very temporary.
You’ll need to see a doctor, since many things can cause the bronchitis, some are dangerous.
How to get rid of a dry cough?
31.January, 2012
I’ve had this cough for a little over a week and it’s really, really annoying and embarrassing. It varies from a wet to dry cough and now it’s mostly dry. I’ll get a tickle in my throat at least twice a day and I can’t stop coughing for a good 5 minutes. It’s distracting me and probably other people in my class and I need it to stop. I went to the doctor but she won’t give me a prescription unless it continues onto Saturday. Cough drops hasn’t been helping me nor has water.
Try taking a teaspoon of honey whenever you can. If you can get buckwheat unpasteurized honey so much the better but any will do. Know you can’t very well take this to school but there are some medications that have honey in them that you might try and just do the straight honey at home. Luck to you.

Is it safe to take amoxicillin for dry cough?
25.July, 2011
My doctor actually prescribe me Robitussin but it seems it did not work and my stomach fell sour after i drink so i stop. then i tried another herbal medicine no sour pain but the soothing effect is only temporary.
So my friends told me that the best medicine for dry cough is amoxicillin especially if the cough is lasted to 1 week. how true is this?
thank you hope u could help me with this!
If your doctor doesn’t prescribe antibiotics, then don’t take them. It’s misuse of antibiotics that is making them…can’t think of the word…but not work anymore. That’s a serious thing. Do what your doctor says. Get some cough drops. Those awful eucalyptus ones work. Been there.
How to stop a dry cough?
29.March, 2011
I’ve been having this dry annoying cough for the past 2 days and it gets worse when I try to go to sleep. I can’t even sleep comfortably without coughing every 2 seconds. I’ve tried cough drops, cough syrups, teas work on when I’m drinking them, and it goes on for hours! I don’t get to sleep until like 3 am. Please somebody tell me what I can do to make this stupid tickle in the back of my throat go away along with this dry cough!
well actually, even if you think its a dry cough it could actually be mucus running down your throat. it gets worse at night because when you lay down it drips. I had the same exact problem and it drove me insane. you can ask your doctor for an allergy medicine or some nasonex which helps alot.
I have a dry, very annoying cough and I’d like to do something about it, as it keeps me from sleeping. I tried to call the doc to see what she recommends but I couldn’t get a hold of her on Friday. Anyway, I am a breastfeeding mother so I need something that is safe to take while breastfeeding. I also welcome any home remedies if they work. ![]()
Thanks
Are you drinking enough fluids?
Try extra hydration to see if that helps.
