Hi iv been smoking since about june last year, but recently i have developed a horrible cough which i can pin only to this. I only ever smoked because I enjoyed it and told myself I would stop at the first sign of trouble, and i guess this is it.Havn’t had one in about a week now without any withdrawl symptoms except the cough. How long can i expect this to last?

Sorry to hear that you ever started, but congratulations on knowing when to quit and following through. This is a smokers cough that will not stop until your lungs are clear from some of the damage that the smoke has caused. This really doesn’t have a set time but is up to your individual health situation. If you have any health problems other than this cough then this would effect this also. Since you did smoke for almost a year then some damage was done to your lungs and it will take some time for it to heal. Try to stay away from any second hand smoke as this will irritate your lungs too. If it doesn’t stop within the month then make an appointment with your doctor. He might want to get some xrays of your lungs to make sure all is okay and there isn’t any permanent damage. Good luck with being a non smoker and God Bless

My mom’s cough gets so worrisome at times especially after consuming feeds containing starch as she claims. Cold weather is also a contributing factor. She gets antibiotics from her doctors sometimes but improvements are hardly noticeable so we have resolved to try other means like diet restrictions. Who knows what we can do better. Really need help here! Thanks.

If foods containing starch set off her coughing, she may want to avoid them. That said, a cough is the body’s way of clearing the airway. With Bronchiectasis, there are copious amounts of phelgm produced by the lungs. She needs to clear that out. Being properly hydrated can help thin those secretions out. Thinner phelgm can be coughed out easier.

If I drink 8 ounces of cough medicine a day - with the ingredients 15mg of Dextromethorphane and 30 mg of pseudophedrine, what are the long term effects. And how long can I do it?

i don’t recommend that you do it at all…there are so many bad things that could happen to you…

My 12 weeks old baby has been coughing since a few weeks back. Started with one or two coughs a day. Now she coughs about about 5 to 6 coughs a day. Yeatsrday she had 3 coughs when she was sleeping. Obviously her coughs are more now. Is it possible that its whooping cough or am I just too worried?
She would also sneeze one to 3 times a day sometimes, but the sneezing had been there since a few days after birth so we thought it is quite normal.

If she had whooping cough, she would have a high fever and difficulty breathing. She would cough until she vomited. Sounds to me like the problem is that the air she is breathing in is too dry. Perhaps she has allergies to something in your house.

Take her to a doctor and find out why she is coughing

My 7 year old pug has developed a gagging cough 5 days after returning home from the kennel. The cough seems to come in waves sometimes when he is excited sometimes after eating. He slept through the night without coughing at all. He dveloped this symptom after his companion pug became sick and had to be hospitalized for HGE. Hemmorragic gastroenteritis.

Yes, the vaccine protects against only about 20% of the strains of kennel cough-there’s a much better chance of him getting it than avoiding it, even with the vaccine, if he was exposed to bordatella.

She is 20 mths and developed a cough over the past 2 days. Just wondering what is the best stuff to help get rid of it.

Sounds like your child has croup. I got this from kidshealth.org: Breathing in moist air seems to relieve many of the symptoms. One way to humidify the air is with a cool-mist humidifier. Having your child breathe in the moist air through the mouth will sometimes break a croup attack. Or try running a hot shower to create a steam-filled bathroom where you can sit with your child for 10 minutes. Try cuddling and reading a bedtime story while doing this to help calm your child.

If your child has croup, consider sleeping overnight in the same room to provide close observation. If you are not able to break your child’s fast breathing and croupy cough, call your child’s doctor or seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Medical professionals will need to evaluate your child if the croup appears serious or if there’s any suspicion of airway blockage or bacterial infection. As with most illnesses, rest and plenty of fluids are recommended. The symptoms of croup generally peak 2 to 3 days after the symptoms of infection start. Croup resulting from viral infection usually lasts less than a week. The vast majority of children recover from croup with no complications.

I am tired of this stupid cough (a result of a cold I’m still battling), but I can only stand so many cough drops, and cough medicine usually never works for me. I’d like to see what foods are best to eat that don’t exacerbate the cough, and what I should avoid. Thanks!

Food to avoid include dairy products, milk, cheese, ice cream, etc… , as they cause more mucous to form in the back of your throat, which in turn, increases your coughing.

Real honey with lemon in a warm beverage like tea is wonderful for a cough. I’ve also read that the herbs of marshmallow and slippery elm are good for coughs and sore throat, although I don’t know that eating marshmallows would have the same effect. lol. They do make marshmallow tea and slippery elm bark tea (the elm bark tea is pretty yucky tasting) which you could find at a health food store. I would also suggest eating fresh fruits, especially oranges/citrus, and green vegetables like broccoli, etc.
