Is there a good treatment for a bad consistant dry cough?
05.February, 2010
Been going on for 4 days now!
Thanks
SINUSES, NOSE, THROAT, AND LUNGS:
Boil some salty water in a pot on the stove. Turn off the burner. Blow your nose & cough out some phlegm. Make a steam hood by draping a small-to-medium-sized towel over your head & the pot. Breathe the salty steam in your nose, out your mouth several times. Breathe some in your mouth & out your nose a few times as well. Blow your nose often. Keep this up until the steam stops. You can do this trick a few times throughout the day until you feel better. Salt is great.
OVER THE COUNTER MEDS TO TRY:
**Sinus decongestant: Phenylephrine 5mg. You don’t necessarily need all the extras it’s often mixed with.
**Expectorant: Guaifenisen (Mucinex is the brand name, but it’s way cheaper at dollar stores. Always read ingredients!!) liquefies your mucus so it’s much easier to expel. But you have to drink TONS of water or it won’t work, & you must be near a bathroom because it makes you pee a lot. (yet causes constipation… another reason to stay hydrated!)
**Pain, inflammation, body aches, headache, fever: Ibuprofen (Advil) should be alternated with Acetaminophen (Tylenol).
IMPORTANT! IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPORT:
-Stay home. (even one day can make a difference. plus, you’ll keep your germs to yourself.)
-Sleep!!
-Drink plenty of water. (8 8oz servings a day=bare minimum!! pee out those germs & flush ‘em away!!)
-Take vitamin C, zinc, and echinacea.
-Eat garlic. (sorry, but it really is great for your health! and it will give you a good reason to stay home. hehe)
-Wash hands well & often. Moisturize skin to keep from cracking your hands to bits.
-Avoid milk & chocolate, which thicken your mucus and make your fight that much harder.
-Moderate exercise helps too!
NOTE: the meds and garlic are harsh, so don’t take them on an empty or upset stomach.
COUGHING FITS:
>DAY: Mucinex and water. (generic is fine, and cheap!) Cough it out while you’re awake.
>NIGHT: Delsym (cough suppressant, DEXTROMETHORPHAN). Get some restful, coughless sleep.
HOMEMADE EXPECTORANTS: Mix very hot water, cayenne pepper, white vinegar, and honey. >GARGLE & SPIT OUT!!!!!!!<
Or drink hot water with lemon and honey.
NOTE: I am not a doctor or nurse. Consult a medical professional to tailor any of the above suggestions to your particular circumstances, especially taking into consideration your weight, age, health, whether you’re pregnant or nursing. FEEL BETTER SOON!!
Have a new puppy, already been to vet, had been vaccinated with treatment for kennel cough, worms, etc.?
20.January, 2010
Puppy is still hacking/coughing and just today a white kind of foamy mucus came up. Already went to the vet..Got this pup from the humane society and on its vaccination certificate it already had treatment for kennel cough, and our vet gave it another round of convenia and another antibiotic for me to give it daily.. Eating pretty good..Bowls and urine look good to me, any idea what this could be?? I’m desperate..
Puppies can still get Parvo after they have been vaccinated… call the vet at the very least. Puppies can get very sick very quickly.

honey and lemon tea always worked for me, but maybe it was just the lemon tea that helped

What is the diagnosis and/or treatment for scarring on the lungs due to repeated pneumonia?
15.November, 2009
My boyfriend had x-rays taken that have shown he has developed some scarring on his lung due to chronic infections of pneumonia. He has seen many doctors but they haven’t been able to give him any kind of diagnosis or treatment. It’s gotten worse, he coughs all the time, has difficulty breathing, and is constantly spitting up phlegm and mucus from his lungs. Is there anything he can do to treat this problem? And what exactly is this condition called?
Have them do some more tests if they can. My dad had the same thing and doctors who believed the same, but it turned out he had inhaled some kind of microbe - they are still unsure what it was. He is on prednisone now and getting better, but it has taken some time. He did have to have a lung biopsy for the diagnosis, and it was pretty hard on him, but he is 65.
HELP! i had itching and vaginal discharge and persistent cough. i did not take treatment for three months.?
06.November, 2009
Later went to a doctor, took a test I was given peflotab then erythromycin for strep and cipro for the vaginitis (STAPH). This didnt work either. I went to another doctor who prescribed Secindazole tablets and ofloxacin for two weeks for the vaginitis and it improved, but started a week later. I did another test and i was told i had candida, no staph found. I was given Augmentin for the cough and metronidazole for the candida. The cough got cured but the candida persisted. I was then given fluconazole twice and clotrimazole vaginal cream, but the stubborn candida still stayed, i was given miconazole vaginal cream last week and still, no soap! Im going crazy about this! Can someone out there please help?
I suggest you read a bit about candida. It requires usually not only medication but a special diet (no sugars no starch etc) read here:

My 10 year old son is suffering with whooping cough problem, please help me with your treatment idea?

Home Treatment
If your child is being treated for pertussis at home, follow the schedule for giving antibiotics exactly as your child’s doctor prescribed. Giving your child cough medicine probably will not help, as even strong cough medicines usually can’t relieve the coughing spells of whooping cough.
During recovery, let your child rest in bed and use a cool-mist vaporizer. This will help loosen respiratory secretions and soothe irritated lungs and breathing passages. (If you use a vaporizer, be sure to follow directions for keeping it clean and mold-free, usually with small amounts of bleach.) In addition, try to keep your home free of irritants that can trigger coughing spells, such as aerosol sprays, tobacco smoke, and smoke from cooking, fireplaces, and wood-burning stoves.
Children with whooping cough may vomit or not eat or drink as much because of frequent coughing. So offer smaller, more frequent meals and encourage your child to drink lots of fluids. Watch for signs of dehydration too, including: thirst, irritability, restlessness, lethargy, sunken eyes, a dry mouth and tongue, dry skin, crying without tears, and fewer trips to the bathroom to urinate (or in infants, fewer wet diapers).

There are no treatments available other than taking them to a Veterinarian who does the treatment and monitors the dog. Have had dogs that went through it and survived but were never the same. One of my dogs seemed to have gone through it ok only to collapse a few days later and passed away. Years ago the treatment was almost like the old adage..Burn down the barn to kill the rats…now it is much improved and a bit cheaper. Ask around for veterinarians that allow payments. I hope your dog gets better. If you put your dog thru this treatment be sure to put it on a heartworm preventive med.
Does anyone have a good home remedy treatment for wheezing?
10.October, 2009
I have been wheezing and coughing for about the past 10 days. I have been taking an antibiotic for the past 5 days, but not sure if it’s effective. Does anyone have experience with a home remedy (steam treatment, etc) that can clear my lungs? Coughing is mostly unproductive (occasionally I have a really hard productive cough).
hot herbal tea will clear it up
