Hard Cough

I have gone to the doctor and he gave me medicine, it worked for awhile and now it has come back. What should I do?

go back to your doctor and tell them that your problem is re-occurring. Could be a possibility of chronic bronchitis, but the doctor probably wont diagnose you with that until you’ve had it for over a year.

Do you have any other breathing difficulties? Problems with normal respiratory rates? Anything else coming up in/with the phlegm… like blood or brown spots?

Go see a doctor; it sounds like you have an infection. I’ve had a couple of these and I know it’s not fun; a doctor will give you some antibiotics to take, usually enough for 10 days. You will see significant improvements in 2-3 days.

Gah! Okay my mom was sick and now I have a cold!
So now I have mucus stuck in my throat and I can’t cough it out.
I tried the boiling water method. [Inhaling steam]
I tried hot shower.
Salt water.
Everything!
Now I can’t get up and get medication at 3:47

The best is to get expectorant from the pharmacy. But if no pharmacy is open, try some honey. The other thing, most people can increase the mucus they make with dairy products, more mucus would make it easier to cough it up (we call it more productive). Hot food (spicy) also makes the "juices flowing", thinning the mucus, make it more managible. Anything that brings tears to your eyes, and your nose running would do the same thing to the mucus in your lungs. Chillies definitely do this. Also, hot tea, perhaps with lemon?

My Phlegm has always been green, sometimes it’s clear or yellowy.

I read that it’s bad to have green phlegm, but I’m 18 years old right now and it’s been this way for about 5 years.

So how can it be bad? I don’t have any problems.

I smoke, but only about 10 cigarettes a day, and when i breath out (in the same way you do for an asthma test), and when i do you can hear this horrible gargling noise deep in my throat and lungs. I don’t want any useless advice on how smoking is bad for you, i am fully aware of it! But if anyone has a simple cure for it then i would be very grateful! Thanks.

I came down with a bad head cold a few days ago and now it’s in my chest. I’m not having any other problems (fever, chills, wheezing, etc.) and I’m wondering if I should go to the doctor. Can I have a productive cough and have a simple chest cold, or does it pretty much guarantee bronchitis?

asthma is asthma. the mucous from your airways -either your lungs or you oropharynx (your nose & back of your throat). continue to use your inhaler & nebulizer as needed and follow up with your pulmonologist. a nasal rinse daily can help symptoms, too.

Does Promethazine with Codeine clear out the Phlegm? I cough and phlegm(mucus) comes out.?

Promethazine with codeine is intended to stop a cough. It has nothing to do with bringing up any mucus. If you want the mucus out, you need to increase your daily water intake, run a humidifier in the bedroom where you sleep and take any form of over the counter Mucinex.

If you swallow large quantities of it, it may upset your stomach, but it’s not truly harmful. It will go into your stomach, not back into your respiratory system, so you will not cough it up again. The germs it may contain will usually be specific to the respiratory system, so they will not affect your digestion and will be killed by your stomach acid. All in all, though, it’s still a better idea to spit it out when you can just to avoid upset stomach.
