asthma and recent bad cough?

11.September, 2009

okay, so my mom had a cold about 3 weeks ago. those symptoms have cleared up but her cough has lasted for like 2 1/2 weeks. we’ve been to a doctor who gave her mucinex.

she has asthma and she’s been have a hard time sleeping cos of the cough. and sometimes when she coughs a lot she has a little hard time breathing

i was wondering if anyone has been through this?

or the severity of this.

and any kind of remedies and medication.

I have gone through that recently after a long bout of bronchitis. My asthma flared up badly. My doctor told me to use my 2x per day puffer more if I chose to and he gave me two emergency puffers, one for home and one for purse.

When asthma really flares up badly it is horribly scary. You are gasping for breath, you want a gallon of air and you can only take in maybe a pint.

a while back, i had bad dry cough wouldn’t go away. so the doc gave me this steam breather tube and then prescribed me some inhalers. the doc didn’t say i had asthma, but online when i checked the inhalers or pumps were for astham.

anyhow, since then, often i would start to cough pretty much after i’d eat. it would be lots of cough attacks.

does this sound like asthma?

It doesnt sound like asthma… Asthma kinda feels like you were sufficating and couldn’t breath…like someone covered your nose and mouth and you were fighting to get air in.

Also, you breaths would be labored… like you can breath but you feel like you are using so much energy to do so. Last description (like if you ran for a while and you begin to breath hard to get air in). I hope all of my descriptions helped. Anyway, your doctor probably prescribed you asthma medication because of your young age (im assuming) since that is the number one cause of airway difficulty in adolesants. The asthma meds just help open up the airway which wont hurt if you dont have asthma.

You most likely have allergy. Were you prescribed flonaise (fluticasone), nasonex, or any steroids? Those are used for asthma and allergy. If you were prescribed albuterol or ipratroprium those are more for asthma.

Hope i helped but curious what you were prescribed.

its like a permanent tickle thats worse at night. I have an inhaler. I have tried a few of them and right now the one I have doesn;t seem to be working either. My colds last on the average of 4 weeks. I sound like I smoke, which I never have. Its terribly irritating and if there is something other than drugs out there I would like to try it. I drink water, have cough drops, I can’t take cough syrup because it its asthma. I even resort to a little liqueur once in awhile to coat the throat. Help me. There has to be someone else out there that is going through this also

My daughter gets an asthmatic cough when she’s sick. Sounds like exactly the cough you’re describing. When her cough gets really bad, instead of just using the inhaler, I put her on a nebulizer. She gets capsules of both Albuterol and Pulmicort for the nebulizer and I’ll give her one breathing session of each. It makes her jittery for a bit, but it seems to help calm the cough. Hope this helps. I know how absolutely frustrating this cough can be- good luck!!

First Vitaplus – a filipino Nurse who works abroad got her severe cough during fall season. she was advised by foreign doctors to use anti-asthma puff but to no avail. when she came back to the philippines, a friend of her introduce first vitaplus to her. she was curious & hesitant at first, until she tried it. now her asthma is under control and she loss weight too.

Most of the time its a Dry cough but evey once in awhile itll be more wet sounding.. is it just a continuous cold or is it allergies or asthma!? And hell also cough like 3 times then sneeze!

It seems like an allergy more than asthma.

With asthma you’re sure to hear some sort of wheeze when he coughs too. . it’s also usually worse at night. .

If you have coughing asthma (I forget the actual name.) then you know what I am talking about. This is when you cough all day and all night ripping your poor throat to shreds and people tell you that you are coughing to hard because they don’t understand that you can’t help it. It keeps you up all night and you have dangerously braved sleeping with cough drops in your mouth just to get some rest. No over the counter medicine works and regular asthma medicines slightly take the edge off for a brief minute.
I had a medicine a few years ago that I can not remember the name of. It worked better then most asthma medicines, but still not great. I would kill for that right now. It was in a white tube and you needed to attach the inhaler part to it. Anyone have any clue?
OR
anyone have anything that actually stops this.

You sound like you need a asthma preventor. You must see your doctor, and ask to be referred to a lung specialist, who will assess your asthma, and prescribe a good asthma preventor, such Seretide, Becotde, Flixotide etc. You can not get a preventor over the counter.

I use Seretide 500mg, and it works really well.

Good luck!

Boo has tonsillitis

03.September, 2009

we think boo might have a kitty cold or allergy induced asthma… anyone know anything?

——–UPDATE!—————
We just came home from the vet, and Boo has tonsillitis! His coughing and his weird swallowing thing (his tongue protrudes and he swallows super hard and often) are all because his tonsils are swollen and his throat hurts, poor little one. He is now on antibiotics, and hopefully that will take care of everything. Just thought I would update this post, since I know many of you are worried about your kitty having asthma. This cough is not asthma, but tonsillitis!

My daughter has started coughing, the Dr said to me to increase inhalers and relievers, DR did not tell me for how long I should be doing this. I need to know how long a cough lasts in asthmatics, thank you

Don’t increase them too suddenly. Do it in intervals and not for very long. If it gets worse go back to the doc. And if you do let him tell u for how long.
