I’ve heard that asthmatics wheeze and you hear a whistling sound when they breathe. I have asthma and don’t wheeze when I breathe, but when I cough during an attack, the cough is wheezy I think. It sounds sort of like a high pitched whistle when I cough - is that what they mean by you wheeze?

Why does this happen? Is there a reason why it happens only when I cough? Can I do anything to get rid of it?

The wheeze is when you exhale and that is because your airways are swollen and fluids are building up as well. So when you exhale or cough you get the sounddo to the narowing of the airways. During an attack you need to take your medication and let it work. If you are wheezing in other situations you need to find out what is causing the reaction and of course avoid it and see your doctor to see if there is something else you can do to further control your asthma. Hope this helps.

My daughter is 4 years old, and has been suffering from this dry, non productive , dry cough since November. She cough on and off, gets better for a week then starts again.
Just today, her doctor prescribed Albuterol and Pulmicort in nebulizer. She said she might have coughing asthma, and that will help. She has a few allergies also, and takes daily antihistamine, but still has that terrible cough.
Is there any side affects for those meds? Anyone had any experience?

My son was introduced to albuterol when he was 4 months old. He was born premature and his lungs didnt develop well. We used it almost everyday he is off of it now but we keep it just in case. We have never seen any side effects from the use of it. Keep a close eye on her and the prescribtion should tell you what signs to what out for.

my friend has meps next week the first one not the one right before you ship and he always has this deep cough sounds like hes dying and cant breath…not sure if he will be able to hold it in while they check him but either its his asthma or from years of heavy smoking…will they hold you backfor this ?

It’s not looking good for you friend. The doctors at MEPS have normally been on a contract for years, so they have a lot of experience finding and catching people who are attempting to fraudulently enlist or attempting to enlist with a disqualifying condition. I know I surely would NOT want some wheezy asthmatic in the foxhole trying to lay down cover fire for me when I change need to move to a new position.

I know Probiotic Diets work for some things, but I’m not familiar with it working for lung functions. I would suggest you getting on an herbal or Homeopathic medicine to help you. New Sun makes quite a few different formulas for lung health, asmtha control, etc. If you are interested in trying an alternative medicine to help with your problem. Please check out the link below. Good Luck, and have a great day

I’m really worried because i want to train my lungs for longer distance running but I always have problems with breathing afterwards.
Yeah, I only have it while running when I don’t concentrate on my breathing. It hurts after I run, but doesn’t last very long. I just REALLY don’t want asthma because the Marine Corps can’t have asthmatic Marines. I hope this is only because I haven’t run in awhile.

If this only AFTER running and not during, then it might not be. I mean I don’t know how much you’re coughing and weezing, but if its not that bad you don’t have asthma. I used to have that…especially after tough workouts and races. Never really effected me during the races or runs though.

Might as well get it checked out if its a bother.

i have always had symptoms similar to asthma(coughing and tightness in chest after running) but these only happen when i really overwork myself. i was wandering if this is asthma or not, and if so whether its worth going to see a doctor as it doesn’t affect my life much, but some websites say that asthma can get worse over time.

Well..I would suggest yes go to the doctor. As we get older Asthma can sometimes get worse. It "sounds" like you may have exercise induced asthma. Usually this only happens if you get your heart rate up. Usually this does not turn into the asthma we all hear about that can happen at any time not only when exercising. However your doctor does need to have a record of this happening. As always the most obvious answer may not be the correct answer. I would definitely get this checked, you never know. Also your doctor may give you an inhaler just to use when your exercising to alleviate the symptoms. Hope this helps.

do kapal bhati pranyam, it will clear all the blockages, and the level of asthma will decrease slowly, and cough will not even around u .

Hi All, I Am 31 and diagnosed with Coughing Asthma last year, from as far as i remember i have always coughed, I am healthy, and my only vice is drinking, every weekend. Last year I had a cold every season, and then it turned into a chest infection, wheezing and dry cough, this is starting to annoy me as i am not normally Ill, just had another cold/chest infection in december, does anyone have any ideas I could try to stop the cold spreading to the lungs?

try going to http://www.asthma.org.uk/ for advise

well i would ask my doctor about that just to be safe and he would tell you if its normal or not

I consulted a doctor, gave me antitussive, it didn’t work. I took mucolytic formula, no effect also. Tried to rest for 3 days before going to work. Tried water therapy. I still cough.
If it’s asthma, I can’t seem to point out what’s triggering it. I put towel on my back when I perspire, I lower down the AC before I sleep, house is relatively clean, so there should be no dust.

Try drinking lots of water and breathing through your nose. And just eat healtheir in general
