Whistling/Wheezing Cough with Asthma?
15.November, 2009
I’ve heard that asthmatics wheeze and you hear a whistling sound when they breathe. I have asthma and don’t wheeze when I breathe, but when I cough during an attack, the cough is wheezy I think. It sounds sort of like a high pitched whistle when I cough - is that what they mean by you wheeze?
Why does this happen? Is there a reason why it happens only when I cough? Can I do anything to get rid of it?
The wheeze is when you exhale and that is because your airways are swollen and fluids are building up as well. So when you exhale or cough you get the sounddo to the narowing of the airways. During an attack you need to take your medication and let it work. If you are wheezing in other situations you need to find out what is causing the reaction and of course avoid it and see your doctor to see if there is something else you can do to further control your asthma. Hope this helps.

I have asthma and the reason you hear that high pitched sound is because your airway gets constricted and makes it hard to exhale. I use a machine for breathing treatments called updrafts.Make sure you use your Steroid inhaler twice per day and use your albuterol or whatever you have prescribed to you like you are suppose to. You have to be consistant with it in order for it to work.If you are allergic to smoke or dust or mold or pet dander you must remove it immeditaley or you will suffer. I know..believe me.Good Luck…

My son always starts coughing before he has an attack. And he goes from bad to worse FAST. If I can’t control it w/ albuterol I have to take him to the er before he stops breathing.
