can i give a 3yr old with Asthma cough medicine?
17.January, 2010
My Son has a cough that he got with a cold (the whole family has it), he isn’t really unwell apart from a nasty cough. I have upped his inhalers as the doctor suggested, but he is still coughing a lot.
He has a preventer and a relevier inhaler, but i wanted to give him some benylin before bed - would this be ok?

Hello, Thanks for the great answers so far. I have been holding for NHS Direct for 25 mins now, just thought i would post on here in the off chance.
We had Archie at doctors on Friday with his cough and he said it wasn’t asthma related, but as a result of a virus ..
I will keep holding - many thanks again

Call a nurse on call and ask. Read the label to see if it says not to take it with any other medication.

You should probably either ring a pharmacy if you can find one open, or call nhs direct. They can advise you, as you need to give some more information that what youve put here.
It depends on the type of inhaler, how bad his asthma is, etc. Different cough mixtures have different ingredients, some of which can cause his asthma to play up, so ring a pharmacy or nhs direct. They can tell you if the type of benylin is ok.

This is definetly a question for your little ones pediatrician. Under 6, there are not many things that should be given without a doctors advise first.

Hi,
I would NOT use cough medicine as on the Benylin list it says it should not be used if the child has shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty in breathing, recurrent night-time cough or long term persistent cough - unless agreed by doctor,
It is recommended that you continue to use his asthma medcine.
Book him an appointment to see the GP again if you feel it is getting worse to look at other forms of treament but avoid the cough medicine!
Good luck!
Lx
