I have a new puppy that I adopted from the humane society and he caught kennel cough there. I brought him in to the vet yesterday because he was wheezing and coughing all day. They diagnosed him with kennel cough and prescribed him antibiotics and human cough medicine. I have been giving him his medicine since yesterday. I was just wondering if anyone has been through this before and remembers how long it took for their dog to get well. I just feel so bad for the poor thing. I want him to be his pokey little self again.

Kennel cough can last anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks. It does go away. It is the same as the flu for people. He is very contagious to other dogs so keep him home and inside, warm and with lots of water. Ice water will be more soothing to his throat. The antibiotics are to keep it from turning into pneumonia or other secondary bacterial infection. KC is a virus. As the weeks pass the coughing will lessen. Also no collars. only use a harness to keep pressure off his throat. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

I’ve noticed that some folks cough and sometimes spit after eating a good meal. What’s that about?

idk really know it happens to me some times esspecially depending on the food
mexican food, oranges, ice cream, milk. I cough up phlegm after all these. idk I just do

As soon as my local vet’s office opens I am taking my newly adopted 3 month old puppy out because I believe he has kennel cough. Exactly what will the vet do to determine or treat kennel cough if that is in fact what he has?
BQ: My sister has three dogs whom she probably won’t get treated. When my dog is treated and cleared up is it possible for him to catch Kennel Cough again from the untreated dogs?

Kennel cough is extremely contagious for dogs as it is air born

The vet will exam your pup by rubbing up and down on his throat, usually if it is kennel cough the up will cough. Kennel cough sounds like they are chocking and trying to bring something up and sounds horrible.

If it is kennel cough the vet will prescribe an antibiotic for any underlying medical issues and so that the pup will not get pneumonia. They may also give have you give Robitussin Dm to help reduce the coughing. Kennel cough does have to run its course which usually can be 2 weeks but it can also last longer.

When taking the pup in to the vet make sure you tell them you think he has it as they will want you to come in a different door and take you right into a room so as not to infect any dogs that may be in the office.

You can turn on your shower and get the bathroom steamy which can help with the coughing as well.

As for the pup catching KC after he has recovered.. Yes he can, if not vaccinated and is around any dog that has it, whether or not it is showing signs then yes your pup can get it many times.

If your sisters dogs are not recovered from the kc and are not UTD on their vaccinations then you should not have your pup anywhere near them until your pup has received all of his vaccinations.

You should not take your pup anywhere other dogs are or have been until he has completely received all of his vaccinations as he can contract any number of illnesses and diseases.

Our 11 week old puppy that we adopted from the animal shelter 9 days ago was diagnosed today with kennel cough & pneumonia. She is coughing, very lethargic & won’t eat or drink. The vet gave her an antibiotic in shot form & gave her fluids. He said that she had a guarded prognosis, meaning she might make it, might not. I’m very worried, we’ve only had her for 9 days, but we are already attached. I’m just wondering if she does pull through, how soon should I start seeing improvement?

There are two types of vaccines for kennel cough. The inject able vaccine takes a while to have an effect, so it is not the best choice if you are in need of rapid protection. The intranasal (inhaled through the nose) vaccine has a quicker effect and is best for more immediate pet contact situations.

Kennel cough causes bouts of high pitched, honk-like coughing that keeps both you and your pet awake at night for up to 2 weeks. Onset of this bacterial disease occurs abruptly after contact with infected dogs.

"During an infection, dogs generally keep up their normal activity level and don’t feel too sick," There is no cure for kennel cough except time. Thus, prevention is the best way to contend with this disease. "However, kennel cough is self-limiting and will generally clear up in a couple of weeks even without any medication."

Owners should be aware of possible secondary infections, which may lead to pneumonia. If pneumonia sets in, antibiotics may be necessary to help clear the infection. At this stage, getting phlegm out of the dog‘s system is key for recovery. Intense coughing can be painful for your pet, so limit activity; the more your dog moves around, the more he will cough.

If you have other dogs in the house, they will probably get kennel cough too, but you can take some precautionary measures. Separate everyone, and wash your hands after contact with each dog. Use bleach to clean areas where your sick dog has been.

"If your pet is coughing for more than 2 or 3 days without signs of improvement, bring your pet to your veterinarian," "Your canine’s cough may not be kennel cough." IF you see any secondary signs, such as depression, lack of appetite, fever, blood in phlegm, or difficulty breathing, bring your pet into your local veterinarian for assessment and
treatment.

Most importantly, if your dog does have kennel cough, do not take him into a situation where he will put other dogs at risk of infection. This is very contagious!

Most people do not vaccinate their dogs against Kennel Cough unless they are going to be around other dogs, or in a kennel or are a show dog. My parents have a kennel and require all dogs to have their vaccine.

Chesty cough & asthma?

15.May, 2011

Ok hey guys so i have been ill since last saturday with a viral infection today is sunday! I went to the doctor on tuesday and she prescribed amoxicillin to me to try and fight it i was starting to feel better but now my cough is gone very bad and when i start to cough i find it hard to breathe. Last summer i had hayfever and it brought about asthma…is this my asthma playing up or what?

could well be both.you had secondary bacteria infection following a virus and it could well inflame your asthma.if you got Ventolin inhaler spray use it and see your dr tomorrow,if you wheezing anyA&E put you on nebulizer .I really advice you pop down to hospital get it.Many asthmatics do that

I adopted a chihuahua mix about a week ago and she is suffering from a kennel cough. Took her to the vet and he prescribed her some cough medication and antibiotics. It now a week since she took the medication but it seems like she is not getting well. How long will she suffer? It hurts me to see her cough her lung out.

It really depends greatly on how healthy the dog is to begin with. I bring home foster dogs all the time and they ALWAYS have kennel cough. Sometimes it takes 2 weeks, sometimes it takes a month. My vet recommends using Robitussin DM (make sure it’s DM, easy way to remember is "D-og M-edicine) and keeping the dog in the bathroom with you when you take a shower, the steam will help clear up congestion.

Just went to the doctor for a severe chest cold and bronchitis and got prescribed cough syrup with codeine in it. Along with the cough, chest pain, and ear aches, I am also experiencing severe back pain from straining while coughing. Will the cough medicine also help my back?

Yes that should help.

I have a small german shepherd puppy adopted from an animal shelter and he has kennel cough. I think he may be progressing to pneumonia but we have medicine for both of these problems(kennel cough and pnemounia). I just dewormed him so I was wondering could the worms that were in his stomach be absorbing the medicine we were giving him and preventing him from getting better?

The condition of your pet seems a little serious. Its best that you consult a vet regarding this so you can give the needed treatment at once. If not possible, try consulting from this site http://bit.ly/c6qYat – you can get professional veterinarian’s advice in 15 minutes.

We just adopted a dog from the pound who has kennel cough. We already have a dog at home that had Kennel Cough before, is there any way to keep her from getting sick?

Get the vaccine and treat your dog that’s at home before exposing the dogs to each other.
It doesn’t HAVE to be a shot; there’s an intranasal spray for bordatella.
You could also have your vet do this vaccination of your current dog.
If you wish to do it yourself, you can get it at Jefferspet. -!-

Other than coughing a lot, I have no other symptoms. Tussin and Sudafed seems to help, though as soon as the time is up on the meds, I am back to coughing again. I have no tightness in the chest, no wheezing, no headache or body aches…I have been attributing it to very low moisture in the air, and am not feeling sick at all, otherwise. The cough is just a nuissance.

you could have a mild upper respiratory infection kicking around, it’s that time of year, nothing major but if it’s feasible I’d have a doc listen to your lungs for the sake of it even if you don’t feel wheezy. it’s what you’d want your daughter to do if she were sick for two months, right? she’s at the age of watching you. not trying to guilt trip you just saying if you can go to the doc you might as well. *butt grab hug*
