Is it normal to develop a cough after quitting smoking?
29.April, 2011
I recently quit smoking, 4 days ago. I started coughing last night. It is a productive cough. I have a dr appt for later this week. Just wondering if anyone else has anything similar happen.
If anyone has been thru this, how long will I keep this up? When will it get better?
Yes, isn’t that strange? I never coughed when I smoked, only when I quit. I was told that your body starts purging itself of toxins as little as 4 hours after quitting. Wild huh?
i have bronchitis, i took the antibiotics but still have chest pain and cough up green phlegm?
26.April, 2011
I have bronchitis, i took the antibiotics for 14 days, but still have chest pain and cough up green phlegm. Does this mean that I still have bronchitis or could I just be still coughing up stuff that got broken up? Im also taking mucinex DM…
call the doctor in the morning and talk to the nurse you might not be over it yet. keep trying to cough that junk up and drink lots of fluids.green indicates infection.
My friend is just 13 years old and she is coughing up blood. She cant breathe sometimes. Her heart is not functioning properly. I dont know whats wrong with her. Is there any treatment? I really want to help her. The doctors say that she is going to die in 1-2 months. There is 20% chance that she might live a LITTLE longer. And if she suffers from any emotional type of thing now, her heart is going to fail.
A number of conditions, diseases, and medical tests may make you cough up blood.
Diseases and conditions may include:
Blood clot in the lung
Bronchiectasis
Bronchitis
Cancer
Cystic fibrosis
Goodpasture syndrome
Inflammation of the blood vessels in the lung (vasculitis)
Inhaling blood into the lungs (pulmonary aspiration)
Irritation of the throat from violent coughing
Nosebleed that drips blood down into the lungs
Laryngitis
Pneumonia
Pulmonary edema
Systemic lupus erythematosus
Tuberculosis
Is it normal to cough up phlegm for 4 weeks?
22.April, 2011
I’m 21 years old, smoked pretty much everyday for 2.5 years. I quit smoking about a month or so ago. I have been having nasty coughs almost everyday since then. Is it normal for this, is my body just trying to get rid of all the nasty shit my body was holding onto? Thanks.
The phlegm is yellow-ish green, mostly yellow, sometimes some gross sneezes with some dark color. No fever at all, been feeling pretty much better than ever besides the coughs.
what color is the phlegm? any fever?
EDIT: yellowish green could be infection and if it is ,it can lead to bronchitis then pneumonia if left untreated.
Coughing up phlegm is normal but nasty cough with yellow-green color sputum could be something. If you develop fever thats definitely an infection..
dark/black/brown means old blood..
Go see a dr to make sure..

Try to drink alot of water and try some warm tea or tea with soothing honey in u don’t like tea just eat a spoonful of honey with a little sugar.
We went to the Dr. He says there is no medicine and to just use a vaporizer..but it doesn’t go away. Any home remedies?
I got the Vick’s vaporizer for my son when he had a bad respitory chest infection. I would put a pinch of salt in it to make it hotter and I would have it near him as much as possible and when he was in the bath. After a couple days it eventually helped. They also have baby vicks rub for soothing. Otherwise, I don’t know of much else that the baby could do or take because 2 months is so little.
The saline drops really helped keep his nose from getting raw.
Since my husband quit smoking 3 weeks ago, he only coughed up phlegm 3 x and does not have a cough, what does?
16.April, 2011
this mean for an ex smoker that smoked 1 pack per day from the age of 24 to the current age of 48?
We heard that he will be coughing up a lot of phlegm for the first 2 months after quitting due to his lungs clearing out the junk from smoking.
So does the lack of cough and phlegm mean that his lungs were not in very bad shape after 24 years of smoking?
It could mean that, yes. Depends a lot on what kind of cigs he smoked and how hard he inhaled. A lot of people smoke cigs and don’t fully inhale; almost like a cigar.
Good on him for quitting!
What happens when you take too much cough syrup?
15.April, 2011
I have a really bad cough, and I’m taking this Chinese cough syrup. It’s fabulous, but they say you should only take three spoons a day – I suppose that’s for average, Chinese customers, not a big German guy like me who weighs 250lbs and is 6.5′ tall?
So, if I take like two to three spoonfuls three times a day, will I be OK?
"Cough syrup" is a very broad description – there are a whole lot of things that can be in cough syrups. Some are completely harmless and can’t be dangerously overdosed, some can kill you if you take too much…
So, as long as you can’t give all the ingredients, nobody, not even a doctor, can tell you what will happen if you triple the normal dose.
Height and weight have an influence on how much of any medication you need, but they’re by far not the only things that do. Did you ever have to take higher-than-average doses of other medicines? If yes, it is probably safe to take a little more of that cough syrup, but I would not just try it, I’d ask a doctor. Better safe than sorry, right?
How to get rid of chronic cough!!?
13.April, 2011
I have this cough that I can’t get rid of. I went to the doctor and they gave me medicine for a sinusinus infection and a double eye infection. I completed the medicine but I still have this cough. I have tryed cough drops, syrup, tea and these things give very temp relief . Is there anything else I can do over the counter??
A bad cough, can create acid reflux, which keeps the cough going. Try a round of Prilosec or similar acid reducer.
If it doesn’t help within a short time, get back to the doctor.
What can I do about mucus drainage and coughing?
11.April, 2011
My mother has a really bad cough. She says she has a lot of mucus drainage in her throat and it causes her coughing and even vomiting. She has had this problem for at least 25 years. Doctors basically told her nothing medically can be done and surgery would not be worth it because of her old age. Please tell me any home remedies that could be done to help her.
Unfortunately, if she has emphysema or chronic bronchitis, there’s not much she can do. Sometimes long-term antibiotics can prophylactically manage exacerbations of her chest infection (i.e. the antibiotics can prevent her chronically-inflamed lungs from getting infected).
If her condition deteriorates, she may need portable oxygen to help her breathe. Ask her what her diagnosis is and then ask your doctor what the symptom management plan is for her. She may not be cured, but her doctor should discuss any symptom management options with her (and you if you are responsible for her care). She’s entitled to dignity and care, no matter what her age.
