Hard Cough

I took my golden retriever to the vet today and he has kennel cough. Are there any decent (safe) home remedies besides cough medicine for this? I feel weird about giving my dog human cough medicine.

Home remedies is not going to cut it,please take the advise of your vet,pets take many human medications with no problems.I hope your dog got an antibiotic shot while at vet..

Its been going on for like 2 weeks and cough syrup isn’t working! and yes I smoke,but I don’t know if the phlegm is because I smoke?

Okay, if you buy cough syrup that says 10% alcohol, how much is in each dose taken? Is it 10% in each dose like a shot of liquor would be or is it a different amount?
How is a dose of cough syrup compared to drinking a shot of whiskey, wine cooler, beer?

It depends, 10% = 20 proof. So no, it’s nothing like a shot of liquor, much much less. Figure a shot is one ounce, jigger is an ounce and a half. Scotch (per say) is 80 proof, which is 40% alcohol, look at it from that point.

We recently adopted a 10 month old Boxer from the Humane Society. We took her to the vet a few days later to get all her shots, including the vaccine for Kennel cough (Bordetella) She started sneezing and couging shortly after that and the vet says that it’s normal. Well it’s been almost a week and she is still coughing really bad. Sometime she coughs up mucus. Any home remedies we can try before taking her back to the vet?

If she was just recently at the vet, you should be able to call and tell them she got the vaccination and now she has symptoms. This could be from the vaccine and it could have already present at the shelter and just now showing signs.

It sounds like you already called and told the vet she had this. I would call back and tell them the symptoms are persisting. Since they have just seen the dog, the ~might~ just prescribe you the correct medication without seeing her and charging another office visit fee.

Unfortunately, there is very little you can do for a home remedy besides keeping her well-hydrated. Good luck with her. Kennel cough is VERY common and pretty easy to treat with the vet.

ETA: I have heard of giving otc human dextromethorphan HOWEVER I would not do so without specific dosing information for your dog based on his weight from the vet.

The types of colors I’ve heard of being coughed up are
Black
Orange
Rusty color
Yellow
Lime green
Green
White
Pink

I know that certain colors can tell you something right?

Black can be old blood or dust
Orange can be sinus infection with blood in it…or dust particles such as paint.
Rusty color can be blood
Yellow is infection
Lime green and green are old infection
white is normal
Pink is probably a little blood

Symptoms can include a harsh, dry hacking/coughing, retching, sneezing, snorting, gagging or vomiting in response to light pressing of the trachea or after excitement or exercise. The presence of a fever varies from case to case. The disease can last initially from 10-20 days and can re-break when the dog is put into a stressful situation which puts stress on the dog’s immune system. Diagnosis is made by seeing these symptoms, having a history of exposure is also helpful but not always found as kennel cough is easily spread through contact with contaminated surfaces such as the ground, toys, and sidewalks.

I have 5 border collies and we are due to go to agility shows in 2 and 3 weeks. One of the dogs has started coughing today. She came into contact with a dog last weekend that developed kennel cough a few days later but wasn’t actually coughing at the time. I really want to go to the shows in 2 and 3 weeks time so is there a treatment that would get them clear for then? 4 out of the 5 dogs are insured so if there was a treatment would it be covered by the insurance also?

Your vet would give you the best treatment, regardless of the time frame you would like it done.

I am 12 and I have had a dry cough for 3 weeks now. it is really annoying and sometimes keeps me up at night. Are there any medicines i can take? i wont take robitussin. It makes me sick. Should i visit the doctor? Any ideas what this could be? Thanks in advance.

I’m planning to adopt a dog, but it turns out it got kennel cough. It’s only four months old, so how long until the dog would be better if treated? I don’t want to bring home a still slightly sick dog because I have an old dog and I don’t want her to get sick.

First get your other dog treated using the nasal dose (it works better). The cough can last several weeks and is highly contagious. It’s not life threatening but can cause complications in an already sick dog. You don’t want to expose your other dog to it until you have it cleared up. You will need to keep it in quarantine until it is past the contageous stages.

Been sick for a straight week with a bad cough and lots of phlegm, and the usual flu symptoms. Been taking cough medicine but it’s not helping out.I am thinking about going to my doctor but i wanted to see if anyone would know what i have before i jump the gun and think my lungs are gonna explode.

Head to the doctor immediately. You sound like you have an infection. Never fool around with your lungs. You aren’t jumping the gun, you are being sensible. Lung infections can be nasty and hard to clear up if you don’t get them treated.
