My dog has kennel cough and the vet wants to put her on antibiotics?
30.September, 2009
My dog had the Bordetella Vaccine but was exposed to a dog that has kennel cough the next day. I’ve searched online and everything I’ve read says that to just let the disease run it’s course and the dog will be over it in 2 weeks. The vet assistant said that kennel cough doesn’t go away by itself. She said they would have to put my dog on two different antibiotics, one for inflammation and I can’t remember the other. I heard antibiotics are bad for the dogs immune system though. I tried to find a suppressant for kennel cough locally but didn’t have any luck.
Kennel cough can be caused by one of two things. A virus or a bacteria. The vaccine only helps against one. Kennel cough can go away by itself, but it may not and it can get worse. Antibiotics aren’t bad for the dogs immune system. If the kennel cough is viral it will help prevent a secondary infection from taking place while the dogs immune system is busy with the virus. If it is bacterial the antibiotic should clear it up.
I’d be cautious about using anything not recommended by a vet. Some human medications are toxic to animals and without talking to a vet you do not know the proper dose for your animal.
I would recommend doing as the vet says. The antibiotics shouldn’t hurt your dog and the antiinflammitory will help lessen some of the symptoms.

Keep the stress level low. The minute I feel stressed out at work, I literally stop in my tracks, take a deep breath and imagine I’m coming back to center. It means not taking on too much work, it means not taking on other people’s stress. There is no mandate from on high you must burn the candle at both ends to get ahead in life. Who are those voices in your head yelling at you to push harder? Parents? God? Society? Cultivate a supporting voice who tells you to breathe.

Exercise. I do something every day of the week. I walk, I hike, I bike. Rain or shine. Even if it’s just 30 minutes. If I’m at a job and not working from home, I walk on my lunch hour to shake off the stress, both physical and mental.

Step Three

Cut down on the sweets. Sugar jacks me up and that means more stress. I can also feel my nose dripping when I have too much sugar (not from a cold but from allergies), so I know sugar whacks out my immune system.

Step Four

Get enough sleep and eat foods that are good for you. I think of sleep and good nutrition as the foundation of a house. If you don’t have that, the whole thing is off kilter.

Wash your hands frequently. Duh. Simple but it works.

At the first sign of a cold, or the first sign of a cold that someone else in the office has, I take the combo tablet or capsule of Echinacea and Goldenseal. Works like a dream. I’ll take it for a week or two, all the way through the cold going around the office. I’ve warded off many a cold this way.

I take a zinc supplement year-round in calcium-magnesium-zinc. My acupuncturist once told me we don’t get enough zinc in our vegetables because the ground they grow in is often depleted of minerals. I noticed that when I sucked on a zinc lozenge at the first sign of a sore throat, the soreness would clear up quickly. I connected the dots and realized zinc could help me even before I got a cold and sore throat.

what is the strongest cough syrup you can buy over the counter so i want waste my money
Some states sell a the C-V drug codeine OTC, and it is the only controlled OTC. There is probably quite a bit of paperwork with it because it’s a narcotic.
The other alternative is dextrometorphan, which is in things like Robitussin.
My girlfriend coughs and snorts all night every nigt?
30.September, 2009
She says she has asthma but doesn’t take anything. She literally is coughing from morning to night and in between coughs she clears her throat and snorts up something in that exact order, it’s quit rhythmical. She’s been doing this for as long as we’ve lived together - over 7 years and doesn’t want to see a doctor because in her words they can’t do anything but put her on steroids for life and she says she’d rather cough than use a drug for the rest of her life.
It sounds a lot like she has post-nasal drip. This can be caused by allergies or respiratory problems. Has she tried a long-acting antihistamine/decongestant like Claritin D or Zyrtec D? They have side effects, but they are mild compared to the side effects of steroids. They are over-the-counter so you won’t have to go to the dr. to get them. Everyone in my extended family has bad allergies and the symptoms sound very familiar!! Has she been officially diagnosed with asthma? If so, she needs other medicine that the dr. can give her and if she insists on no steroids, a good dr. can offer alternatives. She should try a D.O instead of an M.D.
Dry cough for two months now, could it be asthma?
30.September, 2009
I consulted a doctor, gave me antitussive, it didn’t work. I took mucolytic formula, no effect also. Tried to rest for 3 days before going to work. Tried water therapy. I still cough.
If it’s asthma, I can’t seem to point out what’s triggering it. I put towel on my back when I perspire, I lower down the AC before I sleep, house is relatively clean, so there should be no dust.
Try drinking lots of water and breathing through your nose. And just eat healtheir in general
what is kennal cough( pertaining to dogs) is there a cure or treatment?
30.September, 2009
"There are several causes of coughing associated with tracheobronchitis, all
of which get lumped under the general name "kennel cough" at times. So it
is possible for a dog to get kennel cough from two or three different
causes in one lifetime. In addition to that, the most common cause of
tracheobronchitis in dogs is probably Bordetella bronchiseptica infection,
a bacterial infection. Immunity to this infection is not long lasting even
after having the illness. Immunity probably lasts 6 to 12 months in most
dogs and when it wears out they can get the infection again. There are
vaccinations for Bordetella. In a high risk situation it might be a good
idea to vaccinate twice a year for this infection. In other circumstances
using the vaccine once a year may be adequate or even using it only when it
appears likely to be necessary, such as prior to boarding a dog at a kennel
or participating in an event in which many dogs will be present. "
"Tracheobronchitis, commonly referred to as "kennel cough" is usually caused by the bacteria Bordetella bronchiseptica. It can also be caused by several viruses. Some vets feel that it is best not to treat this condition with antibiotics since it is almost always self limiting and the organism is a normal inhabitant of the upper airways. Treatment may lead to resistance problems and difficulty treating the most serious complication, pneumonia, if it occurs. So many dogs are very uncomfortable due to the severity of the cough that I think most vets do use antibiotics to treat this. I personally like sulfa/trimethoprim combination antibiotics such as Ditrim (Rx) or Tribrissen (Rx) or doxycycline but I suspect that many antibiotics work well for this condition — and no antibiotic at all is OK most of the time. Use of a cough suppressant can make the dog a lot more comfortable, whether antibiotics are used or not. "
could chronic cough cause cerebral aneurysms?
30.September, 2009
when someone coughs blood rushes to their head, therefore it makes sense that such person would be at a higher risk of stroke or cerebral aneurysm, is this true?
It may seem so but it does not. An aneurysm is cause by having a weak place in an artery. This can be caused by many diseases or a congenital defect.
If you have a weak place in an artery in your brain it is possible that this could trigger a weak place into bulging.

How can i sleep tonight with my dry cough?
30.September, 2009
I only got 3 hrs of sleep and i need to sleep tonight how can I? I cant breathe through my nose cause im congested and breathing through the mouth makes me cough. Any tips?
Vicks VapoRub can help loosen the mucous. Guiafenesin (a tablet available over the counter, one name brand is Mucinex) can also help loosen up the mucous (and it doesn’t make you feel gooey like Vicks can.) Another suggestion is this: try sleeping in an upright or semi-upright position. I have found that this helps me breathe better when my sinuses are all congested.
