My black Lab "Jazz" had kennel cough 2 years ago, a vet, very stupidly operated on her at the time and she developed a very serious case of pneumonia. As a result I now keep her kennel cough vacs up to date. Her close friend Bella now has kennel cough, who, in general does not mix with other dogs. That is why I ask if Jazz could carry the infection without getting it herself.
Yes it is possible for her to be a carrier also your other dog may have caught it from somewhere else. If she is under vet treatment at the moment then you should be seeing some improvement soon.
What causes people to cough up phlegm?
31.July, 2009
Especially phlegm that is clear?
The phlegm is a secretion that your lungs and other air passages make as a self-defense mechanism. Any bacteria or viruses that hit it will likely be stuck. This is why when you have a cold or something like that you cough more: your body is making more secretions to catch the germs. Every so often, the body needs to clear out these secretions to eliminate the bacteria.
Also, if these secretions settle in your lungs, there will be more difficulty in getting the oxygen that we need from the lungs into the bloodstream. When you get a cold, you sometimes feel like you have to cough because you can’t breathe well. That’s why.
And on another note, the phlegm that is clear is the normal phlegm. If it’s other colors, then it’s either picking up a lot of debris, or there is an infection causing germs to get caught up.
Our 4-year-old kid has allergy to dust mites. Recently, he coughs and sneezes a lot after wakes up in bed each morning. He can usually get a good sleep during the night, and he is fine after he goes to school. If this is associate to his allergy, why he doesn’t cough during the night? What is the mechanism of early morning wake-up coughing and sneezing? How to prevent this to happen? I will certainly check with the doctor, but your suggestion is also welcome.
Mucus builds up in the nose, sinuses, and throat overnight and when you wake up and move it can move too, and become an annoyance so you end up coughing, hacking, or sneezing to clear it out. It very well could be a symptom of his allergies.
Other than asthma, what would cause a child to develop a chronic cough every three to four months?
31.July, 2009
For the past six years a now 13 year old male child has developed a loud, hacking cough every three to four months. The cough persists for as long as a month. Prescription and over the counter medicines quiet the cough somewhat, but it does not go away in response to the medication. He is approximately 50 pounds overweight and it is possible that his mother was using illegal drugs during her pregnancy with him. So far, doctors have not given a diagnosis. They offer pre-asthma as a possibility. The cough is loud and hard enough that his school does not want him in the classroom. We need some answers!!
Could have something to do with Bronchiolitis. Do a search on it to see if it fits the boy’s condition, then ask the doctor. You might also want to go to another doctor, even at a teaching hospital, such as Yale University Medical Center in CT, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and other locations, Mount Sinai or Columbia Presbyterian in NYC, or the best in the nation is Denver Jewish Medical Center. There are many different lung conditions and diseases, and they are not easy to diagnose. Most pulmonary specialists deal with asthma, emphysema, and others, and do not have a lot of knowledge in lung conditions that are out of the ordinary. Don’t know what is the insurance that covers him, but it should at least cover 70% if out-of-network. If you or whoever is his guardian wait on the current doctors, you could be regretting it greatly in a few years.
My mother is having allergy for years. Now she has nasal polyps and dry cough. What about Chinese treatment?
31.July, 2009
Please tell me your opinion about Chinese medicine.
Or do you have any other suggestions to get rid of this.
She is 46 years old. I’m scared whether it would cause asthma gradually
Please help me on the basis of your experience
One of the non-invasive therapies available for nasal polyps is NSAID therapy. Have your mother take one aspirin a day if she can tolerate them, gradually, the nasal polyps will shrink. Make sure she can take aspirin before undergoing this treatment.
Every couple weeks my son will be feeling completely fine and will all of a sudden get a horrible cough. No other symptoms other then vomiting sometimes. Then he will get right up and be totally fine and doesn’t act like he is feeling sick at all.
HI Scatter
COughs are truely misunderstood. Here is the definition and some remedies to utilize. A colon cleanse would be advisable as well with the vomiting issues.
Cause
This is often caused by a stomach disorder that comes from overloading the system with food, wherein fermentation in the stomach causes phlegm. It may also be induced by inflammation in the bronchial tubes due to a neglected cold. Worms may be the cause. Many coughs are from a nervous condition, where coughing may eventually become habitual. Coughs are highly misunderstood. Usually a sore throat and coughing are caused by the sinuses draining the eustachian tubes, which is like pouring acid down the throat. A cough usually comes from a lowered vitality in the system from improper diet, loss of sleep, lack of exercise, and fresh air, improper breathing, poor elimination, or improper night clothing and bedding.
Herbal Aids
1.General Instructions: Acute coughs can often be relieved with a little honey and onion syrup. When it is the result of an old acute condition, clear out the morbid condition as rapidly as possible without causing irritation. In old cough conditions, comfrey with vervain or mullein are very good. The antispasmodic tincture is also excellent, and it is good to massage the chest area across the back with an antispasmodic tincture during attacks of spasms. Antispasmodic tincture may be used both internally and externally as a liniment on the throat. If this is due to a neglected cold, any of the diaphoretic herbs are excellent. To relieve the coughing spasms, use horehounds, comfrey, or a small amount of lobelia. High enemas of herbal laxatives will relieve congestion of the bowels, and if the cough is severe (asthma, whooping cough) load the stomach with liquids and induce vomiting.
2.Bronchitis, Bronchial and Spasmodic Coughs, Whooping Cough: Drink the infusion of red raspberry leaf tea freely.
3.Comfrey: Coughs, raw or sore throat, slight hemorrhage. See formula for 1 wine glassful of mucilage of comfrey root every hour until tissues are healed and coughing stops.
4.See formula for coughs, asthma and bronchitis using elecampane, skunk cabbage, aniseed, pleurisy, licorice, lobelia, ginger and cayenne.
5.See formula for coughs, consumption and tuberculosis using cayenne, slippery elm, lemon and honey.
6.See wonderful old time recipe for cough syrup made with onions and honey.
7.Dr. Christopher’s Antispasmodic Tincture: (Antsp Tincture) is useful for coughs.
8.You can massage the chest with antispasmodic tincture, and give a tea made of equal parts wood betony, spearmint, peppermint, and catnip.
9.Dr. Christopher’s Cough Syrup (Herbal Cough) is a fine old fashioned combination for coughs.
10.See recipe for garlic syrup which is very useful for coughs.
11.Juices for coughs : Carrot, carrot & spinach, blackberry, fig.
Best of health to you and your son.
Cheers
what should i do about a dry persistent cough?
31.July, 2009
i had the flu about three weeks ago and since then i’ve had a dry cough that will not go away. i have constant coughing fits that leave me gasping for air. this also leads to some insomnia, i cough myself awake. my parents don’t have the time or energy to take me to the doctor. any suggestions?
Have you noticed any heartburn? I had a bad cough once that won’t go away and it turned out to be acid reflux burning my throat. I had to go on Acid reflux meds and than it went away.
I have a terrible cough and can’t remember what I can take to suppress it. Do you know what is safe to take in my eighth month?
Call your doctor just to make sure, but Tylenol things are usually ok!
What home remedies can get rid of coughing?
31.July, 2009
I’ve tried drinking water but it didn’t help I’m coming out of cold. I keep having coughing spasms Anyways please help me.
There is no medical study that shows that "cough" medicine reduces coughing. (I know this from my kids pedi and the ER). The only medicine they can give that seems to have any effect is codeine. Codeine "may" reduce your cough, but also the cough may be protecting your lungs, so it also can be bad.
Home remedies are really your only hope, and probably the best thing for it (FOR A CHANGE!!)
It depends what is causing the cough. Since you’re coming out of a cold, I’m guessing you have that nasty residual cough where you don’t really feel sick but keep coughing anyway. An allergy cough or asthma cough might be helped by treating the underlying condition. An uncomplicated (no pnumonia for example) from a cold is REALLY tough. In a healthy person, a cough can last a month after the actual cold has gone. Drinking water will only soothe a tickle in the throat for a minute or two.
Here is my cough regimen:
1. Lots of fluids (water, soup, tea, etc)
2. reduced dairy, no milk
3. Steamy showers, humidfier in the bedroom at night.
3. Nice cool bedroom, 60 would be great if it was humid.
4.. Vicks in any form if you have it. (gel, cream, plug ins, for the vaporizer, it really does soothe)
5. During the day, try lollipops or lozenges.
6. BLOW THAT NOSE…REALLY GOOD.
Otherwise you just have to suffer through and try not to cough till you puke. Write it down on the calendar so you can remember if it happens again next year at the same time. This might help a spring allergy.
