So, last night I was up half the night coughing, but I was afraid to take any medicated cough syrup because I’m pregnant and I’m not sure what is safe, and what isn’t. Are there any natural cough remedies that I could take before bedtime to cut down on all the coughing?

P.S- I did make some hot tea with honey in it, and that seemed to help a little. Looking for other suggestions.

Put Vicks vaporub all over the bottoms of your feet, then some thick socks. Sleep tight!

Been going on for 4 days now!

Thanks

SINUSES, NOSE, THROAT, AND LUNGS:
Boil some salty water in a pot on the stove. Turn off the burner. Blow your nose & cough out some phlegm. Make a steam hood by draping a small-to-medium-sized towel over your head & the pot. Breathe the salty steam in your nose, out your mouth several times. Breathe some in your mouth & out your nose a few times as well. Blow your nose often. Keep this up until the steam stops. You can do this trick a few times throughout the day until you feel better. Salt is great.

OVER THE COUNTER MEDS TO TRY:
**Sinus decongestant: Phenylephrine 5mg. You don’t necessarily need all the extras it’s often mixed with.
**Expectorant: Guaifenisen (Mucinex is the brand name, but it’s way cheaper at dollar stores. Always read ingredients!!) liquefies your mucus so it’s much easier to expel. But you have to drink TONS of water or it won’t work, & you must be near a bathroom because it makes you pee a lot. (yet causes constipation… another reason to stay hydrated!)
**Pain, inflammation, body aches, headache, fever: Ibuprofen (Advil) should be alternated with Acetaminophen (Tylenol).

IMPORTANT! IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPORT:
-Stay home. (even one day can make a difference. plus, you’ll keep your germs to yourself.)
-Sleep!!
-Drink plenty of water. (8 8oz servings a day=bare minimum!! pee out those germs & flush ‘em away!!)
-Take vitamin C, zinc, and echinacea.
-Eat garlic. (sorry, but it really is great for your health! and it will give you a good reason to stay home. hehe)
-Wash hands well & often. Moisturize skin to keep from cracking your hands to bits.
-Avoid milk & chocolate, which thicken your mucus and make your fight that much harder.
-Moderate exercise helps too!

NOTE: the meds and garlic are harsh, so don’t take them on an empty or upset stomach.

coughing FITS:
>DAY: Mucinex and water. (generic is fine, and cheap!) Cough it out while you’re awake.
>NIGHT: Delsym (cough suppressant, DEXTROMETHORPHAN). Get some restful, coughless sleep.
HOMEMADE EXPECTORANTS: Mix very hot water, cayenne pepper, white vinegar, and honey. >GARGLE & SPIT OUT!!!!!!!<
Or drink hot water with lemon and honey.

NOTE: I am not a doctor or nurse. Consult a medical professional to tailor any of the above suggestions to your particular circumstances, especially taking into consideration your weight, age, health, whether you’re pregnant or nursing. FEEL BETTER SOON!!

Cuz ppl I know drink regular cough syrup and sprite, but I’m pretty sure if it’s not prescribed it doesn’t do anything.

It gets them "high" depending on how much of the syrup they put in it.
The ingredient they look at is Dextromethorphan.

Around Christmas, I got a bad cough. My cough has gotten better but I still cough a lot and it’s been almost a month. I also have trouble breathing and wheezing. I’ve never had any asthma symptoms before but I don’t know. My dad had asthma when he was kid if that matters. I’m 13 years old

Based on your family history of Asthma, you’re now suffering from Asthmatic problem.wheezing is a positive sign of Asthma plus it is accompanied by persistent cough.though it looks like a mild attack but you should take Salbutamol syrup or just Ventolin syrup.

Lately when I walk more than a short distance I cough badly and almost puke. I have bad asthma, should I worry? I’m sick, but not badly. And my cough sounds horrible because I live with a veavy smoker. (Not asking for adive on how to get my mom to quit.) But lately I almost puke when I get out of breath and I’m wheezing even when I’m sitting. Should I call my doctor? or is it just asthma?

yes worry, and get to the doctor, asthma is serious, and that needs treated, there’s not a lot of information to go on, but, yes see the doctor.

My Staffy/Pom mix came down with Kennel Cough yesterday, the vet gave her some medicine and expects her to be better withing 3 days. It’s a very minor case because she was vaccinated against it and she seems fine apart from the coughing.
She’s never been a passionate eater but she still eats a fair bit, today however although she was very active ate very little. Is this just part of her kennel cough or should I be worried?

Either the medicine or the illness - or both - can cause loss of appetite. It should resolve within a day or two. If not, give the vet a call. I wouldn’t worry too much.

My 7 month old Bernese Mountain Dog has had a chronic cough for about a month. She is acting fine, eating, playing and very happy. She coughs every morning as soon as she wakes up, and whenever she gets up from laying down for awhile. Exercise does not make her cough. She has been vaccinated against kennel cough. We heat our house with wood and it is very dry- could this be the problem? She does seem to want alot of water.

DONT PANIC about my answer, my last dobe had a bad cough, it turned out to be cardiomyopathy (heart condition) phone vet for advice, good luck, i dont want to scare you but do check it out, cus you would if it were a child.

My son is 3yo and he seems happy, fit and healthy. Except that he has a coughing fit when he plays games with us that use a fair amount of exertion and make him puff or laugh a lot. Could this be a sign of some underlying condition? Or is it something that happens often with kids?

It is possible that your child has exercise induced asthma. Is this when he is playing outside, inside, or both. Take a note of the next time this happens because he could just be allergic to something outside… Nevertheless, you should consult a pediatrician.

My husband just took a pre-employment drug test and failed. He took some codeine cough syrup of his mother’s 2 days ago for a cold. He didn’t write it down on the paper when asked if he was taking any medicine. If he explains to them what happened, do you think he will still get hired?

Depends on the job. I would say it was less likely with government jobs then private.

I ride the bus and sometimes it’s full of elderly sick people and they have horrid cough ! Sounds like they could have tuberculosis or hepatitis ..

Becuz they are old and sick I can’t blame them for being in ill health but as a younger person sitting near them on a bus - is it possible to catch whatever they have ?

It just depends on if they are actually sick or not.
An older lady that went to my church coughed horribly like that because she had smoked all of her life.

Some people have diseases that you can’t catch even if you are around them. I wouldn’t worry about it.

If they had tuberculosis…they wouldn’t be riding the bus.
